– Khanh Lang continues lifesaving care. She identifies a later crisis as mercury sulfide (cinnabar) poisoning mixed into a “Cửu Chuyển Đan” pill the Retired Emperor uses—someone swapped it. An old palace maid, Hỉ Ma Ma, confesses to switching pills, pleading guilty without naming a master.
– Hỉ Ma Ma privately warns Khanh Lang not to trust anyone too deeply, not even old acquaintances. Khanh Lang notes the warning but keeps working. She is authorized to make medical decisions, including masking and isolation.

– Vũ Văn Hào is ambushed and almost dies. Khanh Lang rushes to save him with modern techniques and medication. She vents gas to prevent suffocation, treats infection, and keeps him alive through the night; he grudgingly says, “Thank you.” He probes her methods—dopamine, anesthesia—calling them strange. She insists they’re medicine, not poison.
– Amid shifting loyalties, they strike a bargain: if she cures the Retired Emperor, Vũ Văn Hào will let her go—granting separation (hòa ly). She wants freedom more than title.

– Tề Dương—a prince close to the Empress—schemes to use the chaos to blame So Vương for an assassination, but the assassin dies by suicide after changing testimony.

– Trương Thái Y examines Khanh Lang: her organs are failing. The cane’s poison, beatings, and self-inflicted hairpin act have shredded her reserves.
